Rome, Amalfi Coast, Sassi & Trulli (10 Days - 9 Nights) 2012 GUARANTEED DEPARTURES:
May 25, June 8, June 29, July 20, August 24, September 7, October 5 Day 1. Rome. Upon arrival at Rome Fiumicino airport, we will take you to your hotel. Free time at leisure. Overnight at hotel. Day 2. Rome. After breakfast, proceed by private bus and experienced guide for panoramic tour of the Capitol Hill, the Forum and the Colosseum (from outside). Time at leisure. Return to your hotel and overnight. Day 3. Rome/Naples/Sorrento (167 miles). After breakfast, departure to Sorrento with a stop in Naples for a tour of The Maschio Angioino and Piazza Plebiscito. We will then drive through the Sorrentine Peninsula following the beautiful panoramic cliff-top road, which offers an incredible view of this enchanting area. Dinner and overnight. Day 4. Sorrento/Capri/Sorrento. After breakfast, transfer to the harbor and departure to Capri by hydrofoil. Tickets for the funicular in Capri are included. Return to Sorrento and free time at leisure. Dinner and overnight. Day 5. Sorrento/Amalfi Coast/Amalfi/Matera/Alberobello. After breakfast, we will transfer to the beautiful region of Apulia, driving through the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. En route stop in Amalfi for a short visit of this beautiful town, once one of the four Maritime Republics. After lunch, we will proceed to Matera in the Region of Basilicata. In Matera we will visit the famous Sassi, one of the most impressive sites in the World Heritage list, and also the location chose by Mel Gibson to shoot his movie "The Passion of the Christ”. Final destination of our transfer is the town of Alberobello in Apulia. Apulia is famous for its great food, wine and the variety of produce (somebody calls it the granary of Italy). Overnight in Alberobello. Dinner will be served at the hotel. Day 6. Alberobello/Manduria wine and olive oil tasting/Alberobello. After breakfast, sightseeing of Alberobello, famous for its Trulli, round white houses with tall conical roofs. Our local guide will explain their mysterious origins and why people continue to build them. Then we will proceed to Manduria, where we will visit a local winery for a tasting of their excellent "primitivo" wine and a visit to their Wine Culture Museum. A light lunch is included. Dinner and overnight. Day 7. Alberobello/Lecce/Ostuni/Alberobello. After breakfast, depart to the beautiful town of Lecce. Once, an ancient settlement of the Messapii tribes, now Lecce is considered one of the most important Baroque city in Apulia. Baroque, in architecture, is a 16th century theatrical style used by the Catholic Church to show its power against the new upcoming Protestant Reformation. After lunch we will drive to Ostuni, the "White City" perched on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Inhabited since 1000 BC by native people, Ostuni was destroyed by Hannibal during the Punic wars, rebuilt by the Greeks, taken over by Romans, sacked by Gauls and revived during medieval times. Dinner and overnight. Day 8. Alberobello/Trani/Castel del Monte/Alberobello. After breakfast, Transfer to Trani, a beautiful port town that was once under the control of Venice. In the afternoon guided visit to Castel del Monte, the enigmatic octagonal castle erected by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in the 13th century. Dinner and overnight. Day 9. Alberobello/Rome. After breakfast, transfer to Rome. Overnight. Day 10. Rome/Airport. After breakfast, transfer to Rome’s Fiumicino airport for your flight back home.
